When we think of body powder, we most commonly think of the type for babies, but body powder for adults, generally recognized as old-fashioned, is making a comeback. Body powder has many different uses— absorb moisture from sweat, keeping your feet dry from stuffy boots, and giving your skin a silky soft feeling.
By now, you may have heard about Johnson and Johnson making headlines in the news this year for lawsuits related to allegations that their baby powder has caused Ovarian cancer in several women. A woman in St. Louis was awarded $70 million in her case, and there are 2,000 pending lawsuits against the company. The suspect ingredient behind the lawsuits: Talc.
What is Talc?
According to the FDA, Talc is a mineral that is mined from the earth, composed of magnesium, silicon, oxygen and hydrogen. It’s uses in cosmetics include absorbing moisture, prevent caking, and improve feel of a product.
